Survived the first 8 weeks!

People ask me what it feels like to be a mother and how I have been finding motherhood. I haven't even had time to reflect on this. The first two months were just about surviving.

Mostly I felt like a Cow the past eight weeks. As most of you know, this animalistic feeling started already with my natural birth (this was not by choice; the midwives simply deflected my pleas for an epidural). Although the labor was very short, it was so fast and furious it made me feel like one of the cows going through a difficult labor that periodically appear on BBC's Vet School reality show.

Then the whole breastfeeding trials and tribulations came next, further excentuating my cow feelings. Despite suffering through bad "latch" problems, pumping to eradicate Mastitis, and constant around the clock cluster feedings, breastfeeding is worth it. He is strong and healthy, now weighing about 5.1 KG, above average for 2-month olds.

I took Kenneth for his two-month old check-up with the pediatrician last Monday. Funny, I spent that entire day mixing up the word "pediatrician" with "veterinarian." Example:
Nina: "Honey, I took Kenny to the vet today and she said he was very strong."
Kevin: "What?! You took our son to the vet?!"
Nina: "No, no, I meant pediatrician." [Laughter and confused look on my face] Why do I keep saying "vet" instead of "pediatrician?!"
And so on... I still keep wanting to say "vet" whenever I refer to Kenny's doctor... It must be the aforementioned "cow-feeling" or just the "mommy brain syndrome" combined with my lack of sleep since Kenny's birth.

In any case, now that the first difficult 8 weeks are over, I am looking forward to treating Kenny more like my firstborn son instead of my calf. As he becomes more interactive, I feel pressure to start doing things to stimulate his brain cells (nursery rhymes, games, tummy play, etc.---all the things that proper human moms do). He is starting to smile to me now--the most beautiful and rewarding thing in the world!
